Kolibri Partners with PADI AWARE to Protect Our Oceans: Part 4 - Sea Sentinels: Protecting Sharks and Rays

In Part 3, we explored the critical work of the PADI AWARE Foundation in safeguarding vulnerable marine species. Now, let's turn our attention to a specific group facing a dire situation: sharks and rays. These majestic creatures are often portrayed as fearsome predators, but in reality, they play a vital role in maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems. Unfortunately, over a third of all known shark and ray species are at risk of extinction, making them the second most vulnerable group of animals on Earth.

Sharks and Rays: Essential SpeciesThreatened

These essential species face a multitude of threats:

• Overfishing: Sharks and rays are often caught unintentionally as bycatch in fishing gear targeting other species. Their slow reproductive rates and late maturity age make them particularly susceptible to overfishing.
• Habitat Loss: Destruction of coral reefs and seagrass meadows, crucial nursery and feeding grounds, severely impacts shark and ray populations.
• Finning: The barbaric practice of finning, where fins are removed for the shark fin soup trade and the rest of the animal discarded at sea, decimates shark populations.
• Climate Change: Rising ocean temperatures and acidification disrupt prey availability and migration patterns, impacting shark and ray survival.

PADI AWARE: Champions for Sharks and Rays

PADI AWARE recognizes the crucial role sharks and rays play in ocean health and has made their protection a core mission. Here's how they work to ensure their survival:

• Global Shark & Ray Census: Launching in 2024, this groundbreaking citizen science program empowers divers to record shark and ray sightings. This data will provide invaluable insights into population trends, distribution patterns, and habitat use. This information will inform conservation strategies and identify areas in need of protection.
• Advocacy for Sustainable Fishing Practices: PADI AWARE lobbies for international regulations to limit bycatch and promote sustainable fishing practices. They advocate for measures like implementing gear modifications and establishing quotas to ensure shark and ray populations can recover.
• Combatting Finning: PADI AWARE actively campaigns against the practice of shark finning. They work with governments to enforce existing regulations and raise public awareness about the devastating impact of this practice on shark populations.
• Educating Divers and the Public: Through educational programs and awareness campaigns, PADI AWARE sheds light on the importance of sharks and rays in the ocean ecosystem and the threats they face. This inspires individuals to become responsible ocean stewards and advocate for shark conservation.
